Get the latest on the interim Lakewood Pierce County Library

The Lakewood Pierce County Library has secured a property for an interim library location at 10202 Gravelly Lake Dr. S.W., a few blocks north of the current Lakewood Library. If the construction plan holds, the Pierce County Library System hopes you will be enjoying the interim Pierce County Library in late summer!

We acknowledge it has been a long haul to open the interim library. We realize this has been a hardship on the community and a disruption in full library services. We are very sorry it has taken far too long to open.

The 7,500-square-foot interim library will:

  • Provide learning resources and classes for all ages.
  • Deliver books, materials, and events for enjoyment.
  • Offer welcoming places and spaces for diverse communities to connect.
  • Include access to more computers than other similar-sized libraries in the Library System.

The full-service, multi-generational library will be a center for learning and enjoyment, and serving the Lakewood community, seven days a week.

The interim library will be a destination for children and families providing space to grow and nurture a love of reading with literacy-rich activities.

A super sweet feature, we hope families will enjoy, is the special care we took to welcome kids to the children’s area with lake-themed chairs, featuring ducks and swans.

We are thrilled to offer classes and events in the library and outside in the plaza area. From story times for the youngest visitors and STEAM classes for students to teen advisory councils and book clubs for all ages, the interim library will be a community learning and gathering space. The generous outdoor plaza area is one of the unique offerings at the library, where you may participate in classes and programs that allow for all the messiness children, teens and adults like to get into with the many creative library programs.

You will recognize some parts of the library on Wildaire Road in the new library. Community members and the Library System were committed to retaining furniture, books and other furnishings from the previous Lakewood Library. Workers reupholstered some of the chairs and benches. In addition, some of the tables, interior signage, as well as books, movies and computers are from the previous library.

Also, you may enjoy some artwork from the previous building.

The very popular Friends of Lakewood Library book sales will continue at the library and the Friends will have a dedicated space at the front of the building for ongoing book sales.

Please note, the timeline is tentative and could be impacted by supply chain challenges, contractor availability and agency building requirements.
