Bequest in your Will or Trust
Here are common types of bequests to consider:
- Residential bequest – A percent of the remainder of your estate after other specific legacies have been fulfilled.
- Specific bequest – A specific dollar amount, stated percentage of your estate, or a specified gift-in-kind such as collections, arts, books, jewelry, etc.
- Contingent bequest – A gift that is originally intended for other beneficiaries but, in the event of their prior passing, is redirected as a charitable donation.

Real Estate
These gifts often include donor-appreciated real estate such as a home, vacation property, undeveloped land, or commercial properties.
Often when making gifts of real estate, you can make this gift while continuing to use the property throughout your lifetime, and you may even receive a tax deduction for your gift.
Gifts of Stock
Stocks, bonds or any other securities can be transferred as gifts. Stock gifts benefit both Pierce County Library Foundation and Foundation donors.
If the stock has appreciated in value, the holder can avoid paying the capital gains by giving it as a gift.
It is a Foundation policy to immediately convert all stock transfers to cash at the time of gift receipt. Your tax deduction will be determined at the time the stock gift is exercised by the Foundation and is equal to the difference between the option price and the stock value.

Endowments
Endowment gifts are a wonderful way to create an everlasting legacy. Endowed funds are invested strategically to preserve their original value and generate income used to support the Library’s work for generations to come.
They enable the Library Foundation to protect endowed monies for future needs and provide annual revenue based on the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation’s Endowment Spending Policy. GTCF handles all administrative details including investment management, eliminating the need to create an investment policy and monitor investments.
Endowment Areas of Support

Payouts from these endowments support the purchase of books for the children’s collection and outreach program, and enable children and teens to participate in programs designed to engage curiosity and encourage their love of books and reading.
