Get the latest on the interim Lakewood Pierce County Library
The interim Lakewood Pierce County Library is now open to the public at 10202 Gravelly Lake Dr. S.W.
The 7,500-square-foot interim library:
- Provides learning resources and classes for all ages.
- Delivers books, materials and events for enjoyment.
- Offers welcoming places and spaces for diverse communities to connect.
- Includes access to more computers than other similar-sized libraries in the Library System.
The full-service, multi-generational library is a center for learning and enjoyment, and serves the Lakewood community, seven days a week.
The interim library is a destination for children and families providing space to grow and nurture a love of reading with literacy-rich activities.
A super sweet feature, we hope families will enjoy, is the special care we took to welcome kids to the children’s area with lake-themed chairs, featuring ducks and swans.
We are thrilled to offer classes and events in the library and outside in the plaza area. From story times for the youngest visitors and STEAM classes for students to teen advisory councils and book clubs for all ages, the interim library will be a community learning and gathering space. The generous outdoor plaza area is one of the unique offerings at the library, where you may participate in classes and programs that allow for all the messiness children, teens and adults like to get into with the many creative library programs.
You will recognize some parts of the library on Wildaire Road in the new library. Community members and the Library System were committed to retaining furniture, books and other furnishings from the previous Lakewood Library. Workers reupholstered some of the chairs and benches. In addition, some of the tables, interior signage, as well as books, movies and computers are from the previous library.
Also, you may enjoy some artwork from the previous building.
The very popular Friends of Lakewood Library book sales will continue at the library and the Friends have a dedicated space at the front of the building for ongoing book sales.
We acknowledge it has been a long haul to open the interim library. We realize this has been a hardship on the community and a disruption in full library services. We are very sorry it has taken far too long to open.
“It‘s so exciting. It’s lovely and I‘m so happy it’s back open. We went to Steilacoom Library when it was closed. It’s nice to see other locations and more opportunities to read.”
~Courtnee, Pierce County Library cardholder
“I grew up nearby, just graduated from college and am now looking for a job. It’s great to have a library close to work on job applications and it looks so nice.”
